SCL Update on Covid-19 safety mandates
Update on Covid-19 safety mandates We have recently received mandates from St. Louis County and St. Louis Archdiocese regarding face coverings.  If you are on the grounds here at SCL you are to be wearing a mask (face covering) - children below 9 years of age are exempted. There are several other exemptions:  Landscape volunteers while working need not wear masks, but they are not to interact with anyone unless a mask is put on. If you are exercising and are keeping physical distancing, you need not wear a mask, but as with the landscape workers, if yo...

A Message from Fr. Jim

Posted on June 28, 2020 in: General News

A Message from Fr. Jim
The 8 by 10 of my grandma Lucille I was asked if I would agree to let our youth ministry host Wednesday evening meetings here at SCL.  The case was well made that isolation and loss of contact with friends has a high impact in a negative way with young people.  Could we find a way to have them come together to reinforce their faith and their love for one another?  Of course, I said yes.  But I’m the covid cop here at SCL, the one who has to say we can gather but only in ways that respect the mandates from the archdiocese and the public health of...

Some Changes in our Weekend Mass Schedule and Experience
Some Changes in our Weekend Mass Schedule and Experience We have had four Sundays with public Mass resumed and we have determined several things given our experience.  We went to three Masses on Sunday rather than four because we wanted to be sure we had ample time to get people safely and with social distancing observed into church, and to have ample time to clean up in between Masses.  Our weekend population of our celebration has grown over the four weeks, and we don’t want to be faced with turning people away. We will return to our “normal&rdquo...

A Message from Fr. Jim and staff
All of us hope and pray that the effects of the pandemic will soon begin to fade and heal.  But hoping is not enough, we are required to respond to these unhappy circumstances with prudent choices that place the health and well being of all who come here first, especially the most vulnerable: our beloved seniors and those with health challenges, along with all medical personnel sacrificing so much for the good of all.  Even if the loosening of the lockdown continues without a second surge of the virus I deem it prudent and necessary to announce: All events that oc...

UPDATE ON SCL PARISH FOOD PANTRY
Update on the SCL Parish Food Pantry We chose to shut down our parish food pantry in mid-March.  Our volunteers are all in the high-risk category, and wisely they chose to stay home.  We contacted food pantries and determined that for our regular clients the Affton Food Pantry was close by and a good fit.  We donated to AFP a sizeable amount of food with the understanding that they would serve the folks who ordinarily would be served by SCL. As you are painfully aware this is a slow-motion disaster.  We will send all the remaining food in our pantr...

An Easter Message from Fr. Jim

An Easter Message from Fr. Jim
I want the Bull Market back, I want to get my hair cut, I really want my job the way it was before March 16, I want the sign of peace back, I want things back to normal.  Ah normal.  I guess I was lulled into complacency forgetting that ours is a precarious world, with unknown illnesses, with natural forces beyond our human fragility, with tornadoes and earthquakes and tsunamis and heat and humidity.  But isn’t it funny we live in this “real” if not normal world as though we own it.  We craft our society and culture to function rational...

A Good Friday Message from Fr. Jim
Over the centuries the church has understood, taught and prayed about salvation in a number of ways.  One of the major approaches was to see our sins and transgressions rejecting God’s covenant with us, our original sin was to replace God with ourselves, to upend and abandon the creative love of God for us, to alienate ourselves from God, to no longer be in right relationship with God.  We need salvation. We could not earn or achieve salvation on our own, it required the intervention of God in our human history by the sending of His son Jesus.  He wo...

A Song for Nurses

A Song for Nurses
A Song for Nurses One of my favorite authors of spiritual reading is Brian Doyle, sadly he died several years ago, he was living with cancer and only in his early 60’s.  I find so much of his work incredible, so I wanted to share this with you: A Song for Nurses The first time I saw a nurse I was four years old and someone had cut my tonsils out and I woke up addled to find a cheerful woman wearing white leaning over me and murmuring something gentle.  The room was all white and the bed was all white and there were white curtains framing the window....

A Message from Fr. Jim April 2, 2020
Be careful of false dichotomies.  Soon we will be locked in acrimonious debate about how to best choose for the protection of the most vulnerable in our society, how to choose a course of action that will best blunt the pandemic, which will save lives by minimizing the shock to our health system of hundreds of thousands of very sick individuals, how to save many from the life threatening result of our economy in free fall, with millions out of work, mortgages due, rent due, crippling debt. And these are just some of the conversations and choices we will be called to ha...
